Study finds nap refreshes the brain's ability to learn. Although the findings are preliminary, but new research raises the prospect that sleep, especially a long nap, prepares the brain to remember something. It's like rebooting your computer in order to work more smoothly.
"Sleep is not just for the body. It is also useful for the brain," said study author Matthew Walker, an assistant professor at the University of California at Berkeley. Walker and his colleagues split 39 young adults into two groups. At noon, all the participants took part in the exercise of memory required to remember the faces and connect with the names. Then the researchers studied another memory exercise at 6 pm, after 20 people to sleep for 100 minutes. Those who stay awake doing tests 10 percent worse than those who sleep, Walker said. The ability of people to learn to decline by about 10 percent during the day until 6 pm, but sleep can negate the decline.
The structure of the study showed that the phase of non-dreaming sleep can improve memory, he said. "This is further evidence that sleep plays an important role in the processing of memories," he said.
